Differing views of the Franco-Nevada and Gold Fields marriage proposal.-

"...Franco-Nevada can exit its current business model which vice-president, Craig Haase, says has "run out of gas".
...

"...The transaction has been conducted on a 50:50 basis and in the words of one analyst is actually Gold Fields' exit strategy from South Africa.
...

"...South African government is taking a stronger stance against migrating companies. For example, the bank will want to know just exactly what value is flowing into South Africa. It will also look sternly on the Canadian with-holding tax in which a 15 per cent levy is paid on any dividends. Cockerill argues there are ways around this tax such as paying the dividends from South Africa.
...

But the fact of the matter is that Gold Fields does not have a wealth of fresh mining prospects in South Africa. In fact, Gold Fields International is to be positioned such that only a third of the future group's assets will be in Africa. Questioned on the potential problems posed by Reserve Bank opposition, Thompson said: 'We have made a comprehensive submission but we have not had a reply yet. We hope it is soon'."
