Porch Authority: I don't want to talk behind Jim Willie's back, but if he is in jail, I can't help that. I am still smarting from his characterization of "Northern Girls". A friend who will be anon. wrote this on another list I frequent, in response to discussion of dialects and regional quirks of language. I though it would be thought provoking here. Names have been removed - they are all innocent!!
*************** >>>My friend who lives in Columbia, SC (not totally by choice) says that in :the south, you can say the meanest things about someone, as long as it is :prefaced with "bless her heart." :And if someone says to you, "well, bless your heart," they're basically :saying, "bite me." ******* >>>Oh dear, I'll have to remember that because it's a phrase I use frequently (sincerely, but I have used it sarcastically too.)
At a nursing conference one of the nurses from the South (had a little too much to drink) and started telling us "younger Northern girls" about how they use the "velvet hammer" to keep their good ole boys in inline at home. The "velvet hammer" is of course sex. And "using it" means cutting them off!
This west coast grrl will never forget that conversation! This dignified Southern women explained it beautifully and she had the whole table laughing hysterically ... she covered how, why and when to "use" the "velvet hammer." Any way because of the velvet hammer she has never had to raise her voice to husband in 50 years ... because "that is just the way it is." She also informed us with absolute certainty that southern women may act like they don't know what is going on, but they are always thinking, planning, calculating and any southern gentleman who thinks otherwise is a fool.
One other thing about this woman, at most of the social events, in a conference where the women outnumber men probably 300 to 1, all the men were at her table completely amused and taken with her. She was one of the oldest women at the conference (probably in her late 60's early 70's, though she looked great). Someone said her husband is a famous medical researcher and was one of the conference speakers but I didn't verify it, I never saw her with any guy that appeared to be husband but she certainly kept everyone thoroughly amused and entertained. The lady had class and she knew the power of the velvet hammer ... LOL ************
I hope everyone is not too busy with the trip to comment.
I am staying in my office in the rain and mist wishing I were on my way to Hotlanta!!
