Globalstar USA and World Communication Center Join Cancer Fight With Satellite Phone Donation for CureTour2000
Cyclists on 4,500-Mile Trip to Maintain Continuous Phone Coverage Through Remote Areas
WALNUT CREEK, Calif., Jun 13, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
powerize.com Globalstar USA, the exclusive provider of Globalstar's satellite-based mobile communications services in the United States, and the World Communication Center, a premier sales and leasing company of global satellite products, today joined in the fight against cancer with a donation of satellite phones for riders in CureTour 2000, benefiting the Lance Armstrong Foundation. CureTour 2000 is a 4,500-mile, eight-week coast-to-coast cycling project beginning June 12 in Cape Flattery, Washington, and ending August 8 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The majority of the cross-country tour will be in remote areas without access to either land phones or cellular towers. "Whether it's phoning for needed supplies, contacting someone in case of emergency or just calling to talk to family or friends, the Globalstar phones will enable these riders to stay connected throughout their tour," said Mike Kerr, vice president and general manager of Globalstar USA. "Globalstar USA and World Communication Center are pleased to help spread the word about the fight against cancer and bringing in much needed money for research and support of patients and their families." The tri-mode satellite phone, manufactured by Qualcomm for Globalstar, works like a cellular phone (in either analog or digital modes) wherever cellular service is available. In the absence of cellular service, the phone will switch to satellite mode, ensuring continuous coverage. Rugged and durable, the phone weighs approximately 12 ounces. "A bike ride this long winds through many areas where cellular coverage won't be available," said Brendan Kelly, the 26 year-old founder of CureTour 2000, whose father succumbed to cancer 20 years ago this summer. "The Globalstar phone will be an important part of this journey, because it will allow our staff to manage the ride better and our riders to stay in touch with their family and friends." About Globalstar USA Globalstar USA, a Vodafone AirTouch Plc. subsidiary, has exclusive rights to sell Globalstar satellite service in the United States and is responsible for building the satellite gateways and interconnecting with the phone network, development and management of billing and customer care systems, sales, product distribution and marketing.
