Not a question of a penalty being higher. What the guy told his buddies was along the lines of "this is a white guy, if we kill him it's going to get in all the papers and the cops will be under pressure and some asshole will offer a reward and somebody's gonna squeal, and we'll all be fucked. If we just take all his shit the cops won't even bother looking for us". Meanwhile the other guy was jumping up and down saying shit like "C'mon, let's waste his white ass!" Not a great minute. Of course the first guy was right. The cops didn't even look for them, and they never got caught.
