I was in Chicago this week for a meeting.

I stopped by CompUSA and noticed they were selling 8, 16 and 32MB MMC's, but were sold out of I-Jam players. There is a line of Panasonic digital camcorders which also use MMC for still photos.

I also went into several Wolf Camera stores. They have an impressive array of digital cameras now. I am most attracted to the Canon S10 and S20 series, as well as the Olympus 3000 and 3030. The latest Sony Cybershots are also attractive. Most of all I wish we had Olympus on the CompactFlash bandwagon. The product line is very impressive.

At Wolf they are selling 15MB SanDisk CompactFlash multipacks. They come with 2 cards for $99.99 with a nylon (Body Glove-like) carrying case that is neon yellow in color. SanDisk is promoting the idea of multicard ownership which is a crucial marketing manuever. By selling the multipacks they are planting the seed in the mind of the consumer.

I cannot wait for digital camera prices to fall a bit more and for the media to come down in price as well. At that point we will see how elastic the market really is. I can imagine selling 4 packs of CompactFlash with very creative labelling to stimulate consumer interest. It will be like Swatch watches all over again.

Storage is highly personal. As price reductions attract new digital camera users the market for CompactFlash will mushroom. One card in the camera, one card for backup in case you fill the first one up, one card in your handheld and one card in your digital picture frame on the fireplace mantle. Oh yeah, and one card to drop off at your local photo developer for prints.
