Heinz;

Interesting observations. In fact, the beginning of the decline in the Japanese market in the late eighties exactly correlated with the demographic reality. Japan's baby boom was cut abruptly short by the atomic bombs in Nagasaki and Hiroshima - hence the bulk of the Japanese cohort at their peak saving/investing years reached a zenith in 1986/87. Many feel this is one of the major factors leading to the demise of the equity markets as retiring Japanese transferred assets to bonds and postal savings accounts. Demographically, North America is currently equivalent to Japan in 1982/3.

Regards,

Whistler
