Tomas, Sudan's performance satisfactory but problems remain: IMF, "Public expectations and political pressures for immediate use of oil revenues are high," the IMF said.

"However, the oil revenue windfall by itself will not be enough to sustain even required increases in spending, such as in the social and development sectors."

Also; "In addition, the country's foreign debt, 24 billion dollars at the end of 1999, was considered unsustainable".

What I find significant in this news release is that the International Monetary Fund issued a satisfactory performance report on Sudan. Under the terms of the IMF, Sudan's budget must remain transparent, and oil revenues cannot be used to escalate military expenditures. All said, to me it looks like debt collectors are knocking on Sudan's door. eom Ed
