Kim Philby, head of MI6, and leader of the Cambridge Five recieved a commission as a General in the KGB and numerous medals for his "faithful" service as well. He defected to Russia and died there, forever a faithful marxist.

I wonder what the INS guy received for his service to Castro (btw, that is one example where I can't see the benefit to Clinton of persuing that case given the Elian morasse).

But overall, most spies/agents aren't paid a lot. The reason being that, once they have their hooks in you and you've committed an act of espionage, your @ss is theirs and you are utterly dependent upon their not hanging you out to dry. After the first act of spying, the handlers have almost all the negotiating power.
