Thanks for all the input. Old BIOS will not help. Remember, I did a lot of gyrations with the old BIOS in place. I see on the ASUS board a lot problems with SoundBlaster, to which the answer is "update to latest BIOS".

Remember, I tried USB port instead of Parallel Port, and still could not get a response. IRQ7 conflict may be out there, but I cannot seem to spot it. In Win98 I am getting no conflicts.

Not sure about this "CMOS" idea. Can you elaborate?
Shop I took it to seemed to talk of this world "more basic than the BIOS" so I was unconnected after that.
