Spencer Eig, one of the relatives' attorneys, suggested in a Miami news conference this morning that the father use the additional time to "get out of Washington and travel around the United States. . . . Then maybe Juan Miguel could find a place in this great and beautiful land where he would like to live. And then he won't have to force Elian back into the hands of Castro and Cuba and endanger Elian's life."

If the Atlanta court extends its order that Elian stay, I think JM should take Mr. Eig's advice and see the country. It would be a shame to spend all this time here and not see anything but Washington and environs. Besides, nobody, absolutely nobody, stays in Washington in the summer. It would be miserable even for someone from the tropics. Now normally I would recommend that foreign visitors see New Orleans, San Francisco, and the Grand Canyon, but in this case I think a trip to Niagara Falls or Glacier National Park might be nice.
