This was the reason I emailed the question to CNBC for that interview- to get Eli to say precisely this- using removable flash allows the retail price point of the device to be as low as possible--VERY important. Using a disk drive or embedded flash mean adding the cost of the drive/embedded flash into the retail price of the device.
