WATER SUPPLY
Water shortage to threaten China

Water experts warned recently that China faces a serious water shortage around 2010, China Daily reported Thursday.

Beijing in particular has this problem. Now water available for use is one thirteenth of the world average.

But people seem not to be anxious about this harsh situation. Wasting water is rampant in households and factories.

People's living habits such as leaving the tap running on unnecessary occasions are major causes of water squandering.

More seriously, poor use of water has washed away most of what could have been recycled.

To keep the country out of hot water in the future, making citizens more aware of water conservation should be prioritized in the country's informational campaigns.

Now it seems that except for some insightful experts, few people care about this.

Excessively low water prices also encourage people's ignorance of water conservation.

Water fees should be collected on a progressive basis with a limit: Those whose consumption exceeds the limit will be charged higher fees.

The government must formulate rules to encourage factories to save water.
