I respectfully disagree with the Catholic Churches position and I think you are in line with it when you say, <<I don't believe that is God's will.>> My religion, forbids me to say such things because it implies that God is not all powerful. If someone is killed, by accident, disease, murder, execution etc. I believe it is Gods will. I also believe that God has commanded us to be compassionate and merciful toward all his creation. If we disobey such commandments, we are simply earning our just rewards/punishments, but not keeping God's will from being done. God's will is done wheather all of us pray or not a single one of us. It is to our benefit to live according to God's commandments. On the other hand if all of us live and act according to the commandments, God benefits in no way. I don't believe in a God that I can make happy, sad, angry, or sorry; this would imply I have some power over God. I agree with you that living longer creates an opportunity for repentence and a higher likelihood of forgiveness.
