Joe, It appears that... ...Europe's landfills will be flowing over with handsets before long. I guess SanDisk's prospects depend on what portable features are desirable from generation to generation. Modularity will mean different things to different vendors. Flash memory is a great modular accessory. It costs the OEM just 50½ for an MMC slot and all you need to do is keep your MMC card handy with whatever data you like. It will follow you everywhere as long as the chipset contains MMC functionality. Data Storage is highly personal! When my father-in-law upgraded his handset last Summer the dealer in Sweden basically said the old handset was worthless (could be sold as a paperweight in a pinch). He did remove a small, cardboard-like chip from behind the battery which apparently had either his subscriber ID information or a couple KB of memory used for storing numbers and names. The dealer pulled it out and installed it in the new handset so he didn't have to reprogram it. My father-in-law was happy he didn't have to chicken peck in all of his data again. Some degree of modularity is desirable. I wonder if the SIM slot will become a standard. It appears the SIM can be used to upgrade the miniature OS according to the Red Herring article I read. MMC also fits the bill. I hope to see MMC as yet another standard. Cards follow slots...so just follow the slots. Ausdauer SanDisk...We're modular.
