Hi-- Single Mode fiber is not being replaced by anything.
There are many, many dispersive effects in light transmission in fiber, one of which is modal dispersion. The only way round that is to restrict the fiber launch and constrain it to a single mode. SM fiber is actually getting
fancier to accomodate the expansion into DWDM and you may have seen the "True-Wave", "All-Wave" monikers from LU and GLW. At the higher bit rates and longer distances, SM fiber
is an absolute requirement.
