kemble - if both DELL and CPQ maintain server sales constant as a percentage of revenue and DELL continues to grow at twice CPQ's rate or better, then they will certainly catch CPQ eventually, although it does not look to me like it will happen this year.

DELL has made most of their sales in lower-end servers - 1 and 2 processor systems - while CPQ has maintained their dominance of the high end, 4 and 8 processor machines. That in part reflects the impact of services on the sale of those larger systems. In the 8-processor market, CPQ has nearly 10 times DELL's sales.

For DELL to be convincing in it's server play, they need to break through that ceiling and sell more high end machines.

Interesting to watch. DELL has been very impressive with their low end strategy and I can see some of the pieces coming together for their bid to move up.
