Joan, the CFTC report distinguishes between small traders, big speculators and commercial hedgers. generally the commercials are considered to be the smart money. they can be wrong for short periods of time however. the swing in gold was a 60,000 contract swing (from 40K net long to 25K net short) that's quite big, although the absolute net short position isn't. btw, the commercials are also net short a record amount of spoos... regards, hb
