Gene: Your comment is accurate with respect to today's events. Like Mike, I'm digging hard on this one as it really did surprise me to see Toshiba cave in. It will be interesting to see if there are some behind-the-scenes motivations. I've dug a bit into the patent can of worms and noted in a recent article that this was the issue to keep an eye on. It is complicated as heck, but it looks like it is now very worthwhile to dig into it. That said, what the market doesn't seem to have realized is that the royalties that might be generated by a successful prosecution of this patent case don't add up to the kind of market cap we are looking at, but of course markets in a mania stage tend to "overshoot" a bit. (g) I saw some talk of RMBS using the threat of enforcing the payment of past useage of their IP, but since the patent was first submitted almost a decade ago, and wasn't granted until last year, I suspect this might not be a valid threat. Pressing legal cases is time-consuming and expensive. I need somebody with a legal background to provide some reasonable estimate as to what RMBS might spend on this effort.
