Jon: My guess is that the videocam used to pick up IJ's image from the rear of the auditorium was also picking up and recording his voice from the PA system loudspeakers. I don't think there was any electrical connection to the microphone being used by IJ.

This method (use of the videocam microphone for audio) would account for the weak sound level, tinny quality, and also would explain why the voices of people near the videocam are sometimes present, and why the background audience noises are so prominent. Very low signal to noise ratio!

Not a very workmanlike way to do it, but eliminates any need to electrically connect to the auditorium PA system.

A better way would be to have IJ wear a wireless mike independent of the auditorium PA system, and have the mike's receiver plugged directly into the videocam audio input.

Wonder if the QCOM PR budget could afford it?
