Let's assume that your argument is correct. How then do you explain the fact the the law department saw fit to grant Rambus a patent on this?

I just addressed this issue in a post to Zeev. Patent lawyers are in a world of their own, which is generally not comprehensible to engineers.

It is almost impossible to patent anything of real substance and size, but relatively easy to patent little details. I don't make the rules, nor do I understand them.
