Energis in talks with Vodafone for mobile deal
By Neil Bennett

Press releases - Energis

Vodafone

Virgin

ENERGIS, the telecoms group, is holding high level alliance talks with Vodafone Airtouch in an attempt to break into the mobile telecoms market.
Energis is keen to become a Virtual Network Operator (VNO), to be able to offer a mobile phone service to its customers without owning a mobile network itself. The group is thought to be talking to several mobile phone operators but would prefer to strike a deal with Vodafone because it controls mobile phone companies across much of Europe, which would fit with Energis's European expansion drive.

If the companies agree a deal it would be the first time that Vodafone has chosen a VNO partner. Until now only Cellnet and One2One have signed VNO deals. One2One led the way last year after a deal with Virgin.

Until now Vodafone has preferred to sell its services alone. But a partnership with Energis would give it greater access to the corporate market.

Energis, which is run by Michael Grabiner, has recently decided it needs to offer a total telecoms package to its large corporate customers, such as Boots and the BBC, and this includes mobile telephony.

Under the terms of the deal, Energis would buy capacity on Vodafone's networks at wholesale prices and them sell the service to its customers. Unlike other VNO deals, Energis does not want to offer a mobile phone service to retail customers. Instead it is keen to offer mobile phones as part of a package to companies.
