Blake, Was it "trivial and obvious" in 1990? It was not needed in 1990. I have found Ali's discussion about the history of this patent to be rather interesting, however. Ali believes that this part of the patent was amended much later. I'm not a lawyer and have no idea about the legal validity, but from an engineering point of view, the patent appears rather trivial.
