all she wanted was a simple vehicle to take her to the store, etc --- I wanted to revisit this, Steve. The "etc" part is the shrinking aspect. She (mother-in-law) needs a simple vehicle to take her to the store, period. Increasingly, people go one place. Online. While there, they use one application. The browser. That obviates the need for the local operating system altogether. --- PCs are a pain for one reason; the hard drive. I spend more time futzing with my PC than I do my truck, so how 'simple' is that? --- Being that no real alternative to the PC exists yet for the home, a free Unix for my mother-in-law actually makes sense because it's easy to administer remotly (for me) and by setting 'permissions' keeps the user from doing any damage (like changing system settings). --- Once the bandwidth is happening we'll be able to remove our hard drives altogether and hide them behind our copy machines. --- Microsoft itself is planning into that future (Application Service providing). I believe one has an equal or better chance in the future of writing the "OS/Office Suite" check to AT&T as Microsoft. --- The PC has gotten to be an INCREDIBLY complex device that doesn't in the least fill the bill of "simple vehicle". There is a HUGE market for such a simple vehicle. It doesn't have an operating system on a local hard drive. -JCJ
