Paulie:

Re: "Couple this with Intel's lower cost FC-PGA packaging (plastic) compared to the expensive multi-layered CERAMIC packaging of the ThumperTurd, and Intel still has a huge cost advantage"

Comment: Gotta say it again...It's not much of an advantage in the 700 MHz plus segment, when you can't seem to produce in meaningful retail quantity into that segment, the top-end!
Don't you just get the feeling that AMD is stalling at 1 gig, until they are convinced, and that may be never wrt the PWEeeIII, that the botched gate problem at Intel has been effectively resolved?
One, and I'm in that camp, might argue that absolutely no benefit accrues to AMD by retailing anything above the 700 MHz to 1 gig range until such time as Intel can convincingly demonstrate the capability of producing a competitive product at a competitive price within this range, something Intel has promised for the past 8 months, but despite repeated promises, and reassurances of our esteemed Intel devotees on this thread, are promises for which, to date, fulfillment has proven elusive at best...

Hey Paulie, AMD beat Intel, 50 times their size to 1 gig...AMD got to 1 gig from 500 MHz in about 5 months, that's 100 MHz a month. AMD got to 1 gig in January...It's inconceivable to me that AMD can migrate from 500 MHz to 1 gig in 5 months and not develop something well beyond 1 gig in the 5 months that have elapsed since January when they wrestled the microprocessor MHz crown from Intel...By the time, if ever, Intel brings any meaningful competitor to market in the 700 MHz to 1 gig range, my guess is that AMD will then raise the bar to 1.4 gigs, thereby opening up a new top-end between 1 gig and 1.4 gigs...
AMD, with its new young champion, the "spry Athy" is just demonstrating sensitivity and sportsmanship by decelerating its migration to higher MHz levels, thereby easing the pain of the once champion but now venerable (and exceedingly vulnerable) adversary, the PWeeIII...A class act by AMD, imho, to afford the once great PWeeIII, but now well past its prime, the opportunity to exit stage left in a graceful and dignified manner! Kudos "spry Athy"...truly a well-rounded champion!
