Neocon,

Meningitis is a very general term. Screening for meningitis might mean that they looked for viral meningitis, which is a rather benign form of meningitis. Screening for bacterial meningitis is something else. There are typically three types of pathogens that will cause it. They are Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Neisseria meningitidis. The symptoms vary slightly with each type. For example, the strept form of the disease is often preceded by a very sore throat, even strept throat. HI (Type B) is often preceded by pneumonia like symptoms. As I have not seen anyone quote symptoms compatible with either of these two types of bacterial meningitis, and her symptoms are completely compatible with the third (NM), I would lean towards looking at NM as a possible cause. And it would not likely have been routinely screened for by a doctor. It is relatively rare, and even more rare in people Edwarda's age.
