cgraham, It seems that clams and other true shellfish (oysters, mussels, winkles)can carry a disease that is potentially fatal to humans. More than likely what you are referring to is an acute form of infectious hepatitis, which is a viral disease of the liver. Blindness would likely be an extremely rare complication. While in the Army, I saw many hepatitis patients, mostly suffering from serum hepatitis (hepatitis likely caused by sharing contaminated intravenous drugs and paraphernalia), and a few cases of infectious hepatitis, caused by eating contaminated shellfish (mostly in Asian countries, in particular Viet Nam). Edwarda's symptoms would not be compatible with hepatitis in my opinion. KJC
