The chat log sites seem to have stirred interest in a lot of people, even if they don't know what P&D is about.

I suppose that's because the other element of the story, spam, is familiar to everybody.

I, for one, see compelling indications that they are at least mostly genuine. It would be hard to make that dialogue up, making those two real characters develop the way they did, and make it all correlate with the stock charts the way it does. It would be superb literature skills, to make it up. I can't rule out the possibility that the files were touched up a bit, or that important parts weren't omitted, but the basics of the stuff that does show up there looks pretty much real.

Moreover, I assume that BackOrifice and similar products really allow one to do what the hacker says he did.
