AlibiDan - Re: "What makes you think AMD is going to stop at 30%? Jerry will hand 30+% to Ruiz, do you think that the guy who turned around Motorola's semi manufacturing program will just sit there?"

RUiz got the boot from Motorola because HE LOST THE APPLE BUSINESS TO IBM !!!

He didn't turn anything around at Motorola - he was responsible for Apple being UNCOMPETITIVE with Motorola CPUs and now Apple has switched back to IBM for their newer faster CPUS !!

You still aren't keeping up !!!

And that great copper process that Motorola gave to AMD?

Well, Jerry Sanders tells us that it is as fast as the Aluminum process that AMD ALREADY HAS !!!

Oh - Hector also was responsible for getting AMD's flash process into Motorola - which Motorola trashed when they found it wasn't viable -

So, Motorola had to cut a NEW DEAL with SSTI - and license SSTI's SuperFlash process to replace the FAILED AMD process that Hector negotiated !!

What a loser !

Re: "In the spring AMD will start building a new FAB for 12" wafers that will use their proven copper/SOI technology - they will only have to make the move to 12" - and they'll have the advantage of the experience of Motorola's partner Infineon when they do that. At the same time Intel will be trying to move to copper, SOI, and 12" simultaneously. "

So - AMD has proven Copper/SOI process !!! That's cool - when did they PROVE out this new SOI process, pray tell ?

And what SOI products - PROVEN - are they shipping?

And why is AMD suddenly evaluating NEW COPPER processes and equipment from AMAT ? Why would they need to do this if their existing process is "PROVEN" ?

Sounds like their existing process isn't even useful !!!

And AMD is aandonoing it, and having to re-develop their own Coper process for the 0.13 micron generation !!!

Way to GO HECTOR BABY !!!!!!!

AMD uses Applied's CMP tool in copper R&DK&S gets another $29 million order from ASE Electroglas to ship probers to Silterra foundry

AMD installs Applied's CMP for copper R&D

SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc. has installed a Mirra chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) system from Applied Materials Inc. to develop copper interconnect structures in next-generation microprocessors. The tool is being used in AMD's Submicron Development Center here.

"Using the Mirra system enables us to test a variety of process conditions and slurries with a high degree of precision and flexibility," said Craig Sander, vice president of technology development at AMD. "The Mirra system's unique architecture, head design and endpoint features give it the flexibility for development and production requirements."

Applied said its Mirra CMP system is being widely used in pilot production and development of copper ICs. Analysts have ranked Applied as the leading supplier in CMP systems, which are used to flatten layers between process steps. The tool segment is one of the fastest growing markets in semiconductor equipment. Dataquest predicts that worldwide CMP sales will grow from $1.04 billion in 1999 to $2.5 billion in 2004.
