Yes, the writers of bible were on to something. The timescale may be a little off since there were approximately 5000 generations since humans began expanding from their little band. It should be noted that fossils indicate that humans were probably more numerous in the period of a few tens of thousands of years before, but for some reason they died out or were killed off to the relatively small ancestor population that now covers the world.
