you should rephrase that question...it's not why would they do this, but why have they been doing this for the past ten years, and continue to do so... as for the motivation, that's simple...the house of cards that is the asset/credit/derivatives bubble needs to be fed increasing amounts of liquidity all the time, otherwise it will collapse. my theory is that it will eventually collapse anyway...unfortunately i don't know when exactly. today the NAZ made a technical break-out, so i guess for now it's back to bubble expansion once more.
