<<Or, you can define need in a way which satisfies those of us here.>> Lots of scholars have made lists. Here is Maslows list of basic needs:
Physiological: Food, water, air, shelter, clothing, sex Safety and security: Order, stability, routine, familiarity, control over one's life and environment, certainty, health Social: love, effection, belonging, acceptance Egoistic: self-acceptance, self esteem, independence, personal satisfaction, prestige, reputation, status, recognition from others Self-Actualization: Focus on reaching full potential as a human being. (based on the first four categories being satisfied)
I agree that human beings are motivated by these issues. I don't agree that it is necessarily good for us to strive to have complete satisfaction in all these areas. In fact, I am sure it would be a crazy making and fool hardy effort to do so. |
