Ancor Extends Sun's Storage Capabilities
Sun Microsystems yesterday expanded the flexibility and scalability of its StorEdge storage systems. Sun will resell Fibre Channel switches from Ancor Communications Inc., giving IT customers multiple networked connections between servers and storage, and end users enhanced data access. Sun already plays in the storage area network market, which is based on the Fibre Channel interconnect. Fibre Channel allows high-speed transfers and long distances between devices, but the hubs Sun has been working with provide a fixed number of connections. Switches, which connect to servers, storage, and other switches, provide all the scalability most commercial customers can use. "You probably could never read 500 terabytes of data anyway," says Carla Kennedy, VP of marketing for Ancor.
Customers will get flexibility because they will be able to create an infrastructure over long distances, with servers connecting to multiple storage systems based on application needs. Users will have the ability to have applications located anywhere access practically any data. "We don't yet have the panacea today to get to storage from anywhere in the galaxy," Kennedy says, "but there are steps we can take in the meantime."
Under terms of the agreement, pricing will be folded into Sun storage solutions and determined per customer implementation.
