Fairness and equality are not the same thing (imo). Equality is measurable (in some sense)- fairness could be whatever you say it is.

For example- if Mr. X has one million more widgets than Mr. Y they are not equal. But some would say that if Mr X worked 10 times as hard as Mr Y (or even if he didn't) that it's "fair" he gets to keep what is his even if it isn't "equal".
