Cash used in about half of purchases

June 19, 2000

Cash is the No. 1 payment choice for consumers, according to a report by Stuart Weiner, an economist with the Federal Reserve Bank, of Kansas City.

About 50 percent or more of transactions in the United States involve cash, the report shows. Of the noncash transactions, 72 percent of transactions involved checks in 1997. Eighteen percent of transactions involved credit cards, 5 percent Automated Clearing House transactions and 4 percent debit cards.
