ON Semiconductor(TM) Introduces an
Inductorless DC-to-DC Converter With Unique
Performance Advantages Over Earlier 7660 Devices

Next Generation of Industry Standard 7660 Targeted To Lower Output
Impedance Applications

PHOENIX, June 20 /PRNewswire/ -- ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ONNN - news), a leading
manufacturer of high-quality analog ICs for wireless applications, today announced the
availability of the NCP7662 inductorless DC-to-DC converter. An addition to ON
Semiconductor's considerable power management portfolio, the NCP7662 is a monolithic, high
voltage, CMOS switched capacitor voltage converter that offers unique performance advantages
over the previously available industry standard 7660. The NCP7662 provides several supply
voltage conversion functions and can be used to either double or invert the output voltage.

``Although the NCP7662 charge pump provides significant design and performance advantages
over the earlier 7660, it still maintains a compatibility with the existing 7660,'' said Kent
Yancik, marketing manager for ON Semiconductor's Analog Integrated Circuit Division. ``This
new generation of the 7660 is ideal for applications where designers require longer battery life
in standby mode, reduced design cycle, improved handling protection and better performance for
computers, communication modems and other portable products.''

Designed to be pin-for-pin compatible with the popular 7660 device, the NCP7662 offers
significant improvements over the previously available device. It provides several voltage
converter functions. As an inverter, the NCP7662 converts an input range of +1.5 volts to +15
volts, to corresponding output voltages of -1.5 volts to -15 volts. As a voltage doubler, the
device doubles the input voltage to a corresponding output and as a multiplier, the input voltage
can be multiplied to produce the desired output voltage value. Only two non-critical external
capacitors are needed for the charge pump and reservoir functions making this quite a compact,
simple and cost effective solution. The capacitors eliminate the EMI effects normally associated
with inductors.

The NCP7662 is equipped with a boost function that raises the internal oscillator frequency,
from 10kHz up to 35kHz, to optimize performance in specific applications. It also offers
improved ESD protection of up to 10 kV, 98% power conversion efficiency for 2 mA to 5 mA of
load current, efficient voltage conversion of 99.9% unloaded and a low power supply current of
80 microA with a 5 volt input.

The NCP7662 offers full 1.5 volt to 15 volt power supply operation over the entire temperature
range without the need for the need for external diodes, and lower frequency operation is
programmable with only an external capacitor.

The NCP7662 is available in both a 8-pin SOIC and a 8-pin PDIP package. Both versions of ON
Semiconductor's charge pumps represent a pin compatible upgrade to the industry standard 7660
and offer a drop in replacement for competitive 7662 devices.

Samples and production quantities for the NCP7662P and NCP7662DR2 inductorless DC-to-DC
converters are currently available. Suggested pricing for the NCP7662P is $1.36 per 10k units,
and for NCP7662DR2 is $1.26 per 10k units. Additional technical information on these
DC-to-DC converters can be located at onsemi.com
