In the 70s there were lots of equity studies done in the workplace. I remember one in which the researchers were trying to figure out how workers perceived their position. What they found in this study is that the worker tends to identify a "similar other" in the work place and make comparisons against that. If they perceived themselves as similar to another who was getting a much better deal, then they became agitated about it. The definition of "similar other" was tricky as it had to come from the worker and not the observers. For example: some times women identified with men doing the same job, some times not.
