From CNBC-FWIW
CNBC 6/20/00 - 1:15 PM... tell me it's is not a stretch to think that ebbers could turn from telecom's biggest buyer to its biggest seller. Much of the latest chatter is captured in a note out from painwebber analyst eric strumminger today. Strumminger argues that an acquisition of a wireless company such as voicestream by wordcom would bring as much as 30% dilution to the company's expected earnings per share next year, a level he thinks would be intolerable for management. Instead, the analyst argues that in the event that worldcom and justice can't reach a deal, worldcom will go from the hunter to the hunted. Strumminger wrting that he believes management at worldcom will conclude it's best off seeking a merger with foreign based operator with a high mutiple stock such as vodaphone, deutsche telecom or france telecom. He is not along in that thinking. I have spoken with a number of large worldcom shareholders who similarily believe that ebbers will look to sell if spint doesn't go through. Could vodaphone, fresh from its massive acqusition of mannesman, really pursue a deal? Some say it only wants a wireless presence, though in meetings with institutions here in the u.S. Ceo chris gent has spoken of the benefits of a merger of wires and wireless, wherby all voice traffic could be migrated to the wires, and data and its larger bandwitdth requirements sent over the wireless network. Bottom line in all this, this talk most likely gives support to worldcom's share price in the event the sprint deal falls apart....
