Is this Dan Gillmor all wet ?
He seems to think cameras will love this new small IBM
disk drive.
Please tell me he is all wet and WHY !

We've covered this previously, but here is the basic problem (and lets forget all the reliability/power etc arguments).

2MPixel camera with say 16MB CF card, $500.
2MP camera with IBM drive $1000 ($500 +$500)
3.5MP very capable Nikon camera with all the bells and whistles, 16MB CF, $1000.

99% of people will buy either (1) or (3), ie buying to a price point, or buying features. Not many will buy lack of features and high price.

In the long run of course, if you buy lots of CF cards, the IBM may work out cheaper, but you are going to notice the extra $500 up front. Whereas a $50 -$100 CF purchase every now and again can get past the keeper of the household budgets, if you see what I mean <g> .
