TO ALL: Fahnestocks ADSL research report

I just received Fahnestocks & co. research report on ADSL and
they really put down the technology.

Some claims they make are the following:

- The necessary software support systems, high-speed routing
networks, as well as installation and maintenance facilities
all do not exist for ADSL and will take much time to develop.

- ADSL will not be deployed on a large scale because it does
nothing to help the BELL migrate its network towards the end goal
---an all-fiber solution

- ADSL is more expensive than ISDN and is slower than cable modems.
as such, we believe ADSL is sandwiched between other more attractive
alternatives.

- While the technology continues to enjoy success in the lab and
in limited field trials, ADSL has never been tested on a large scale
in the outside plant. We believe damaged cables, improper terminations,
and the presense of loading coils will all serve as significant
barriers to large-scale deployment.

I don't agree with most of their comments and would be interested in
other peoples take on this. Fahnestock usually takes the conservative
approach to new technologies.

thanks
