06/20 1:22P (DJ) Intel CEO Sees Strong PC Market In 2nd Half, More Chip Shortages
Story 0477 (INTC-D, INTC, I/SEM, N/CNF, N/DJN, N/DJWI, N/WEI, M/NND...)
STOCKHOLM -(Dow Jones)- Intel Corp. (INTC) President and Chief Executive Officer Craig Barrett said Tuesday he expects the personal computer market to remain strong this year and microchip shortages to continue. "We're looking at a reasonably strong seasonal second half after a strong first half," he said at a press briefing in Stockholm. He declined to predict when the market may peak. "The PC market is very strong right now... It is stronger than Intel thought it would be this year," he said, adding that the market has also surpassed the predictions of forecasting firms and Intel customers.
Barrett said the high demand for PCs has contributed to the shortage being seen in the microchip industry. He added that under-investment in 1997 to 1999, and inaccurate growth forecasts for wireless devices and PCs, are also to blame. He said shortages are pushing the price of memory chips higher and have pushed retail PC costs up in the last few months. Barrett said he sees continued shortage. "I would not be surprised to see shortage in the industry over the next six to 12 months or 18 months before some of the new capacity comes on line," he said.
On Monday, Intel announced it will invest $2 billion in a new wafer fabrication facility at its European manufacturing operations in Ireland. He said he expected to see continued investments in the industry of this sort.
At an earlier press conference in Stockholm, Barrett called for Europe to lower Internet access costs, to bring affordable high-speed Internet access to consumers and smaller businesses. "Business leaders should demand reduced telecommunications costs to increase Internet usage and to accelerate e-Commerce," Barrett said. "The unbundling of local loops and technology developments in communications hold the promise of increased competition, which will result in better choices of services at lower costs to users," he said. -By Rod Stone, Dow Jones Newswires; +46 8 54513094 (This story was originally published by Dow Jones Newswires) Copyright (c) 2000 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
