Joe, March 17, 2003 ... today, IBM announced a 9GB Microdrive at a retail price of $499. Their earlier 1GB drives are now available at a street price below $100 at many garage sales. That move was designed to counter the SNDK/Sony alliance offering a 2GB "Flash Stick" for $199 (retail price). Although IBM has offered a "lower price per GB" for nearly five years, retail and professional users alike have continued to buy solid-state flash chips at a ratio of greater than 10-to-1. One National Geographic photographer was quoted as saying, "when it costs $50,000 in air fares, hotel bills, and fees to get a just one cover photograph, it is silly to worry about "cost per GB". I'd feel the same way about my daughter's wedding pictures." IBM offered no comment in response to our queries. Craig
