Dawkins jailed for drunk driving

June 20, 2000

SEATTLE (AP) -- Sean Dawkins, released by the Seattle Seahawks despite leading the team with 992 yards receiving last season, has served a day in jail after being convicted of drunk driving.

Dawkins, 29, was sentenced Friday in Bellevue District Court and served his jail term the next day, said Dan Donohoe, spokesman for the King County prosecutor's office.

``It's a first-time offense and a first-time conviction for driving under the influence,'' Donohoe said. ``His case was handled the way any other case would be handled.''

Dawkins also was sentenced to five years probation and fined $680. He faces a 90-day driver's license restriction and must submit to the NFL's Policy and Program of Substances and Abuse, which can include counseling.

Dawkins was stopped last Nov. 13 by a Washington State Patrol trooper who said he registered a blood-alcohol level of 0.11. The state's legal limit is 0.08.

Dawkins, 6-foot-4 and 218 pounds, had 58 catches and seven touchdowns last season for Seattle. He was released two weeks ago when contract talks with the team broke down.

Green Bay and Denver have since expressed interest in Dawkins.
