Cronos Announces Wireless Communications Development Relationship with Rockwell
Research Triangle Park, NC, June 19, 2000 -Cronos Integrated Microsystems, a business unit of JDS Uniphase Corporation, today announced it has entered into a licensing agreement with Rockwell, which provides Cronos with an exclusive worldwide license to a select set of Rockwell patents for the manufacture and sale of high-speed switches for wireless applications. Both companies believe the alliance can further expedite the introduction of MEMS technology into the wireless communications market, allowing for the introduction of additional features and further reduction in size of cellular phones and other wireless devices.
"We chose to work with Cronos because they are experts in productization and are a leader in the industry at transitioning MEMS products into the marketplace," said Derek Cheung, Rockwell's Vice President for Research and Director of the Science Center. "Our research and development combined with Cronos' fabrication capabilities and market access makes for a perfect fit. This relationship can allow us to develop a commercialization pathway for MEMS technology that will reduce costs while driving down the component size of our customer's wireless devices."
"We believe that our technology can translate well into wireless communications," said Robert Bratter, President and CEO of Cronos. "While our development efforts have been overwhelmingly focused on fiberoptic communications devices, we are also working to ensure that we remain on the leading edge of MEMS communications applications. We believe that ultimately MEMS can have as much impact on wireless communications as on fiberoptic communications markets. We expect our relationship with Rockwell to play a significant role in allowing us to deploy MEMS from the very core of the optical communications network, through the last mile, right into the hands of the consumer."
"Cronos' MEMS fabrication process can have the potential to address many of the problems associated with current generation wireless components, including insertion loss, RF isolation and high power consumption," said Alan Morrison, Wireless Market Analyst, Strategies Unlimited. "A reliable, reproducible MEMS wireless solution could mean lower cost, higher performance, board space savings and shorter product design cycles for wireless systems engineers."
