GSM in the USA?-Readers Respond Vociferously The Telecomm Analyst News

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 20, 2000--Wow! After reading through the volumes of e-mail that I received after my article on Voicestream Wireless (Nasdaq-VSTR), one would have thought I had criticized Mother Theresa or Alan Greenspan instead of a phone company. Because the topic obviously hit a nerve, I want to paraphrase the most popular arguments and respond to them.

Argument No. 1: The claim that GSM (global system for mobile communications) is a dying technology is wrong. It's certainly not dying, in fact it's thriving outside the United States. Even if GSM operators are able to offer these plans, their offerings will not yield the same level of profitability as the plans from Sprint PCS (NYSE-PCS) and AT&T Wireless (NYSE-AWE). Argument No. 2: GSM allows people to roam throughout Europe and parts of Asia. Argument No. 3: Voicestream does offer the "free and clear" plans in some areas. Despite the reasoned arguments from our readers, Fertilemind.net still says sell the two GSM operators, Voicestream and Powertel (Nasdaq-PTEL).

Aram Fuchs is the CEO of Fertilemind.net, an independent Internet equity research firm. At the time of publication he did not have any interest in the securities mentioned in this article. Mr. Fuchs frequently buys and sells securities that are the subject of his articles, both before and after publication.
