Samsung, LG go head-to-head in wireless Internet handset market
Samsung Electronics and LG Information & Communications are locked in a fierce battle in the wireless Internet handset market. To strengthen its punch, Samsung has allied with Microsoft of the United States, and LGI&C, trying to stay in step, has tied up with Ericsson of Sweden.

During the second half of the year, Samsung plans to ship all of its mobile phones with wireless Internet access capability. The company will also ship wireless Internet phones equipped with its Web browser and Microsoft's ME(mobile explorer) and Windows CE. In addition, Samsung plans to develop this year a WAP(wireless application protocol), and a synchronous CDMA(code division multiple access) product that can transceive data in wireless mode at a speed of 2.4Mbps.

Placing more emphasis on wireless Internet phones since late last year, LGI&C has introduced 10 new models so far. During the first quarter, LG sold 650,000 wireless Internet handsets, accounting for 59 percent of the domestic market.

LG has developed applications for WAP- and ME-based handsets. It also has developed a wireless Internet gateway system(Model: Doors-II), an Internet data conversion system.
