This news could have potentially big implications. It has been recognized from the European experience that prepaid calling helps foster the transition from wired to wireless. Even though the wired infrastructure in the U.S. is very good in comparison to most other countries, the convenience of a personal phone with calls already paid for outweighs many other considerations.

This innovation should rank with the flat monthly rates for unlimited calling, now being pushed by Cricket, the CDMA service in Tennessee and Georgia, as being very helpful for increasing the overall use of CDMA facilities domestically.
