Integration of Novell Caching Services with Digital Island Footprint Content Delivery Service Improves Web Experience for Customers
SAN FRANCISCO and PROVO, Utah--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 21, 2000-- Digital Island, Inc. (NASDAQ: ISLD - news), a leading Global e-Business Delivery Network, and Novell, Inc. (NASDAQ: NOVL - news), a leading provider of Net services software, today announced a partnership that will further accelerate delivery of Web content for customers of Digital Island's Footprint(TM) content delivery network. Under the agreement, Novell's Internet Caching System technology, designed to improve Web server performance, will be enhanced to intelligently prepare content for distribution on the Footprint network. This will allow Internet content publishers and Web-site operators to more quickly and easily take advantage of the Digital Island Footprint service to optimize their customers' Web experience.

According to Forrester Research, the average viewer will only wait eight seconds for a Web page to load before finding an alternate site. Directly addressing this demand for responsiveness, the Footprint content delivery service distributes web content close to users so that it can be retrieved more quickly -- from a very large network of edge-deployed caches. The Novell Internet Caching System greatly complements this infrastructure by adding origin-server acceleration and intelligent preparation of Web content -- dynamically translating Web-page URLs. This combination of origin-server caching from Novell and network-edge caching from Digital Island provides content publishers with a turnkey content delivery solution.
