hi gottfried,
"To have up-to-date AV definitions one must check on the web site or watch for mrmark's posts"
i check every day, often twice. it's become a part of my routine and takes less than one minute. and i get a kick out of finding an update there waiting. so i'll definitely continue to post notices here on this thread just as soon as i become aware of an update.
regarding symantec notifications, i don't see where it would be difficult for norton to email subscribers whenever a new set of definitions was released. in fact, that should be easy. and i thought that was what we were getting when we registered for that around 6/9. but all i have received was one piece of correspondence on 6/19 that talks about a new worm... "A new virus named VBS.Stages.A was discovered over the weekend"... but nothing about new definitions. i suppose one might suspect that there would be new defintions available to coincide with the worm warning, but heck, i can suspect or guess all by myself without symantec's help. <g3>
i do not check the symantec website for av defs. instead, in just four clicks, i have the norton systemworks2.0 integrator open on my desktop to the av component where i have clicked the liveupdate icon and 'next' in the dialog that pops up, and i'm there checking. and after the new defs install themselves, there are usually about 500+ old av files dumped in my trash. after update, i usually run a full scan before shutting down, and i always dump the discarded av files out of my recycle bin.
:)
