Mysticism was developed to explain natural phenomena (like lightening, eclipses, violent storms, earthquakes, etc.) that could not be explained. To create a sense of comfort and the ability to cope with the sometimes savage elements, primitive man developed a structure of imaginative reasoning to be able to deal with all the unknowns and all the things beyond his control.

As science emerged, and with it real knowledge, mysticism became more and more archaic. It should be no more a vestigial appendage which, given enough time, knowledge and maturity on the part of the human race, will eventually die a quiet (if not long overdue) death.
