If it's pure belief I agree with you. But if, for example, I can prove to you that lead retards children- then I think it is valid for society to make a choice to protect children from lead. I'm not sure I want people to be fanatical about (for example) health issues- but I want a really really high level of concern. Of course just because we think that fanaticism shouldn't happen doesn't mean it won't happen- if the fringe gets control in a democracy (or representative democracy) then the will of the people is the fringe, and then the fringe is really no longer fringe. I don't like that- and I'll always be against it, where the "fringe" ideas seem to be based on belief that has no connection to reality as I understand it.
